Gambhir led IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders for seven years winning two trophies for them.

"Gauti has been a leader for a very long time", Ponting said.

Dashing left-handed batsman Gautam Gambhir was appointed the captain of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Daredevils (DD) on Wednesday for the upcoming season of the cash-rich league.

"I am more excited than I have ever been", Gambhir said on his return to Daredevils. The DD appointed another World Cup victor Ricky Ponting as their coach and the former Australia batsman backed Gambhir to lead Delhi Daredevils this season.

Gambhir was one of the marquee players sold at the IPL 2018 auction that took place in Bengaluru in January 2018. The potential of this group of players is huge and it is now up to us to turn that potential into consistent performances. "I firmly believe that with the players now involved we have the makings of a very good side", he added. He also added that it is fun to be in a peaceful (Delhi) environment once again.

Ponting too heaped praise on the former India opener, stating that Gambhir's outward confidence would help inspire the team. "I played with them for three years, and somewhere, deep within my heart, I'd love to finish with Delhi", he had said. But above all, he is a leader, so this appointment was an easy choice. During the last 10 seasons he has scored 35 fifties. "He has the respect of the dressing room and the franchise is proud to have him as out captain", coach Ricky Ponting was quoted in an official release. Both Ricky [Ponting] and Gauti have spoken to each other. Japanese firm Daikin will continue to sponsor the DD team for the next three years. Daredevils is scheduled to open its campaign against Kings XI Punjab, at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground on April 8.
