"Lowest-rated Oscars in HISTORY", he tweeted Tuesday morning.

"Kimmel, on the other hand, wasn't about to take the shot lying down, tweeting back a succinct, six word comeback, reminding Trump that "ratings" haven't exactly been so favorable to him lately, either".

The ratings hit an all-time low, with 26.5 million viewers tuning in to the annual Hollywood awards show.

Donald Trump has come up against a number of famous showbiz names at awards events in the past - particularly during last year's award cycle shortly after he had been elected. That's a 19% drop from last year's audience and makes it the smallest viewing audience for the Oscars in history. However, the change has rarely had the desired effect, with this year's best picture category failing to include any of 2017's three highest-grossing films: Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Beauty and the Beast and Wonder Woman.

"Shape of Water", for example, won for best picture and only grossed $57 million at the USA box office. If box office gave us some insight into star power and what Americans want, Trump would be right.

As Business Insider's Jason Guerrasio noted on Monday, there wasn't great interest among the general audience in the movies that were favored for best picture.

That aside, Trump just loves to pick fights over ratings (especially if he can say that his absence was the reason).
