Burger-Flipping Robot Mans Grill at California Fast Food Chain, Replacing Workers

According to commentators, whether it is burgers, cars or farming, robots are gaining the skills required for doing jobs that were once staples of employment.

One machine in Los Angeles was created to lend a hand in the kitchen.

Or more specifically, replacing fast food burger flippers with a robot named Flippy.

"The key to success in the restaurant industry is consistency", said the restaurant's owner, John Miller.

A Pasadena, California fast food restaurant called CaliBurger has just debuted its newest employee, and this one never calls out sick, never files worker's compensation, never complains, never takes smoke breaks and always does what it's programmed to do.

David Zito, co-founder and chief executive officer of Miso Robotics added, "I'm thrilled that one of the biggest names in hospitality chose Miso Robotics to assist kitchen staff in their venues".

Before the robot begins its task, it needs a little human help. Human assistants are also still required during his shift, to lay out raw patties and assemble fixings on to the burger.

The robotic arm then uses the spatula like no other, and uses thermal imaging and 3D camera vision to sense when to flip over the patty and remove it once it's finished.

Each burger cooks for about four and a half minutes.

The update includes more accurate tracking software and the replacement of the robot's original burger-flipping claw with a more traditional spatula.

It's important to get it right, because Flippy doesn't come cheap at $60,000.

In addition to consistency and safety, CaliBurger says the robot can cut down on costs. "It's hot, it's greasy, it's dirty". It also meant to cut down on time training new line cooks. "This technology is not about replacing jobs - we see Flippy as that third hand". "Anyone who's ever worked in a restaurant knows how hard the work is and the value of extra hands and that's exactly what we built".
