"KKR has done well consistently in the last 10 years".

Robin Uthappa, who was also among the top contenders for the job, has been named as the vice-captain.

The hunt for Kolkata Knight Riders' new captain culminated with the LIVE telecast of KKR ka Captain Kaun across the Star Sports network - the new home of VIVO IPL 2018.

Present on the occasion were KKR s CEO, Venky Mysore, and Karthik himself.

Karthik has previous experience of captaining Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket.

Karthik has now become the fourth man to captain KKR after Sourav Ganguly and Brendon McCullum and Gautam Gambhir. Hence, they had to choose a leader, who could make the optimum use of the youth, experience and the stardom that the side so brilliantly possess. However, Robin Uthappa has expressed his opinion over the appointment of the Karthik at the helm.

"We had Heath Streak as bowling coach and he was very efficient and I know he has the potential to help these youngsters and they have a lot to learn from him as a bowling coach and they are in safe hands, and with somebody like Jacques Kallis, who is an all-rounder, he would be giving the right advice as well". "I think he has got a 72% win rate which is outstanding as a T20 skipper", Katich said.

With the presence of Australian pacer Mitchell Starc and U-19 World Cup sensation Kamlesh Nagaroti in their team, KKR has a great bowling line-up but lack at the batting side.

"The other thing about him is that he has got a lot of respect from the players given what he has achieved on the field and what he has achieved as a captain domestically". This is the total track-record of Karthik in Indian Premier League all editions. "He knows all the overseas players inside out having played so well over the last 10 years and this is a great time to give that opportunity to him and see what he can do", he added.

Prior to joining the Knight Riders, Karthik has bounced around from team to team as he has represented the Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Lions.

The 32-year-old Karthik, who has played 23 Tests, 73 ODIs and 14 T20Is for India, takes over from Gautam Gambhir, who led the team to two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014.

Knights will begin their campaign at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on April 8 against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
