Smith who was with RR in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2014 and 2015 before switching over to RPS was the only player retained by the team ahead of the auction.

The Royals had earlier roped in former captain Shane Warne as their mentor. "It is important how the captain goes around and creates a friendly atmosphere in the camp by not always talking cricket and also getting to know the players and their characteristics". The Australian skipper, in a statement released by the club, said he was looking forward to leading the team. The team led by Smith participated in final and ended as the runners-up.

"It is great to be back at Royals". Who can forget his innings in the final against Mumbai Indians, where Smith nearly pulled off a successful chase with a brilliant knock but the team fell just short of one run. Really looking forward to working closely with Smith and hearing his thoughts.

Warne said the Royals will continue to play intense cricket.

In the interim, Smith was a part of the Rising Pune Supergiant, leading them to the final of the 2017 edition where they eventually lost to Mumbai Indians.

He has played 69 matches in the IPL so far scoring 1703 runs at an average of 37.02 with one hundred and five half-centuries.

Kolkata Knight Riders will begin their VIVO IPL 2018 journey at Eden Gardens against Virat Kohli led Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday, April 8.

His performance as Australia captain is unblemished.

"I am looking forward to having a successful campaign. Taking the core of the Royals, and supplementing with new talent makes for an exciting squad".

Rajasthan Royals will kick-off their IPL season with an away game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 9 followed by a home game against Delhi Daredevils on April 11 at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. Catch the action live and exclusive 8:00 pm onwards only on Star Sports network.
