Technical issue causing problems, fees for BB&T customers

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina (WDEF) - Customers of BB&T were cut off from their money for awhile on Friday, due to a "technical issue".

The outage affects online banking, their mobile banking app, and the automated Phone24 service. We hear your frustration, and we are committed to making this right.

The bank tweeted overnight Thursday that digital banking, Phone24 and ATM services are now down. That was the reality for millions of BB&T customers that were locked out of their accounts.

BB&T said it did not think the problem was related to a cyberattack but that it resulted from an equipment malfunction in a data center. Thank you for your patience as we work diligently to restore your services.

A statement issued Friday said BB&T customers can use their debit, credit and prepaid cards.

BB&T bank customers are reporting they have not been able to access their checking or savings accounts since Thursday afternoon.

The company said in a tweet Friday afternoon that they could have access to balances and transactions by the end of the day.

The bank says there's no reason to believe the computer outage is related to cybersecurity.

The interruption of services was first reported Thursday night but had not been resolved by early Friday.

The bank responded to customers on Twitter, saying it had identified the problem and was "working to resolve it as quickly as possible".
