Some may argue that at 29, Alderweireld is not getting any younger, and that cashing in on him now would be a wise move, especially when Spurs have other young upcoming defenders in the likes of Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth in their ranks. Despite questions from the media, he could "say nothing about that".

"I'm not involved in the negotiations and I don't want to be because that job is so hard".

"We worked a lot on this aspect and, yes, it is true that we clash a lot in training because he is clever and always has an argument and a reason why, but in the end I appreciate a lot his efforts in giving the team what we expect from him". He was sensational in Tottenham's historic European comeback against Juventus just a week ago.

Mauricio Pochettino believes that Mousa Dembele "is one of the unbelievable talents in the history of football".

"And for me he is this type of player, I think I told you in my book, I put him next to Ronaldinho, Maradona, Okocha - players that I was lucky to play with".

This speculation also comes at the worst possible time, with Spurs in fantastic form and fans starting to dream of a trophy in the form of the FA Cup or, slightly more ambitiously, even the Champions League.

"I'm so proud that Jan has achieved this level today, not only on the pitch but off the pitch", said the Spurs boss.

Pochettino, a former defender for Espanyol, Paris Saint-Germain and Argentina, says Vertonghen has developed into one of the best centre-backs in Europe since joining Spurs from Ajax in 2012. An impressive revival, kickstarted by the appointment of Roy Hodgson and a surprise 2-1 win against champions Chelsea, has them now sitting in 15th - seven points above 20th-placed West Brom. It will be very tough. "The three points are massive for us".

Tottenham now lie in fifth-place.

If they were to make him available for sale, clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester United are nearly certain to firm up their interest.
