The Coast Guard says more than 40 people and their pets have been rescued from flooded neighborhoods in southwestern MI.

Local fire department crews were unable to reach the two due to the water level.

A Coast Guard crew arrived on scene and helped the two people from their flooded home.

Residents in Mississippi's Delta region are bracing for a flood threat that's expected to continue through Saturday night.

Some residents along the Muskegon River are being urged to leave their homes as floodwaters rise in parts of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The National Weather Service says up to eight inches of rain have fallen in parts of northern in since Monday.

The storm system started pushing heavy rain, snow, and ice into the region this week. The plant shutdown forced it to release untreated sewage water into the St. Joseph River.

In Elkhart County, Ind., where Goshen is located, the Elkhart River measured 5 1/2 feet above flood stage by late Wednesday afternoon, officials said, prompting first responders to make 100 rescues and evacuations.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg (BOO'-tah-juhj) issued an emergency declaration for the city, allowing for tougher enforcement of numerous street closures.

Officials haven't yet estimated the extent of building damage, which is concentrated in low-lying areas.

Flooding that prompted evacuations in parts of MI and throughout the midwest continued Friday and could last through the weekend in some areas that have been swamped by high water from heavy rains and melting snow. The American Red Cross said it has opened eight shelters in northern in, where crews used boats to help residents evacuate their homes.
