Mr Pence was set to meet with North Korean officials, including Kim Yo-jong, the sister of Kim Jong-un, the country's leader, and its nominal head of state, Kim Yong-nam.

South Korea's Unification Ministry says North Korea will send a high-level delegation led by Kim Yong Chol, a senior party official suspected of leading two deadly attacks on the South in 2010, to the closing ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

But Ivanka Trump is expected to be in close proximity to the North Korean delegation, at least for the closing ceremony.

USA officials said the North Koreans later cancelled a meeting that had been scheduled for the following day.

Meanwhile, International Olympic Committee members will discuss whether Russian athletes can march under their flag at the Games closing ceremony at the IOC Session on Sunday.

North Korea's committee on Korean reconciliation condemned on Thursday an upcoming joint US-Japan missile defense drill as an attempt to reignite regional tensions and obstruct the ongoing thaw between Pyongyang and Seoul, APA reports quoting Yonhap news agency.

A senior administration official ruled out any possible meeting between Ivanka and officials from North Korea.

"Perhaps that's why they walked away from a meeting, or perhaps they were never honest about sitting down", Ayers said.

Pence, in a speech Thursday before the Conservative Political Action Conference, an annual gathering of conservative thought leaders, vowed to continue efforts to sanction North Korea and stand up to its nuclear provocations. The delegation stayed at the Walkerhill Hotel, a five-star riverside hotel in eastern Seoul.

Kim Yong Chol is in charge of inter-Korean affairs in the North. North Korea denied having anything to do with the sinking.

The PyeongChang Winter Olympics was slated between February 9-25.

Kim made news by extending an invitation to Moon to meet with her brother, which would be the first time the dictator has ever met another head of state. The sister of Kim Jong-un is the central pillar of the most tyrannical and oppressive regime on the planet.

Instead of naming Kim Jong Un, the broadcasts have criticized the North's leadership in a more roundabout way, the aide added, with comments such as "Too much money being spent on missile launches is leading to difficulties for the people".

Still, his visit signals that the nations are trying to improve inter-Korea relations.

Pence said he planned to use his trip to the Olympics to prevent North Korea from using the games as a ploy for favorable propaganda on the communist regime.
