"So I think Old Trafford needs a big Champions League night, and that's going to happen", Mourinho told reporters. We didn't play him to give him more work and protection, but it looks like he wasn't fully fit.

"The year before we didn't play in the Champions League so I think Old Trafford misses this and can create a similar atmosphere to what we had here today and push us through a hard match".

The Frenchman was dropped for the game but was sprung from the bench after just 15 minutes following a hamstring injury to Ander Herrera.

"The goals he gives away, people always running off him, he hasn't grasped it". I think he's 25 in a couple of weeks.

The Spaniard missed Manchester United's 2-0 win over Huddersfield in the Premier League and went on to miss that 1-0 defeat against Newcastle as well, before being sidelined during the FA Cup win over the Terriers. Luis Muriel looked certain to score when he was given space to head at goal just before half-time, yet despite making a firm connection from four yards his effort was brilliantly pushed over by De Gea.

"For a club the size of Liverpool and Tottenham, one trophy in 10 years is pretty embarrassing", the former United and Republic of Ireland captain said. It's too bad but we have to be happy with the game overall.

The Spain global foiled Colombian striker Luis Muriel from point-blank range at the end of the first half not long after tipping over an overhead kick from Argentine defender Gabriel Mercado as the Spaniards created far more chances than Jose Mourinho's side.

"Apart from that I was never relieved".

"The game was even, the stats are what they are". You ask me, 'is it a good result?'. So I feel the result reflects what the game was.

"The way he was playing he showed that intensity that is only possible when you are fit".

Their coach Vincenzo Montella did not hide his disappointment they could not take an advantage into the return leg in Manchester on March 13.
