Renault is claiming an 11.4-second sprint to 100km/h and a 135km/h top speed, but both figures are largely immaterial: the Zoe is a auto designed for European cities, making highway performance less of a concern.

Renault has unveiled a new powertrain for its electric line-up that will debut on the Zoe hatchback.

Europe's best-selling electric vehicle - gets a more powerful electric motor for 2018 along with Android compatibility and a new Purple paint job.

Renault says the new unit will give drivers "crisper acceleration performance on trunk roads", while maintaining the instant torque available at low speeds.

Dubbed the R110, the new electric motor is the same size and weight as the previously available R90 powertrain, and takes up the same footprint in the ZOE's chassis.

The manufacturer says the 109PS powerplant - the R110 - is 16PS more powerful than its predecessor, but carries over its energy efficiency, giving the new model a real-world range of 186 miles in urban and suburban areas.

Buyers will be able to spec a new Blueberry Purple colour, and high-end Intens-spec cars can now be optioned with a Blueberry Purple Pack - adding the funky new colour to the dashboard, gear-lever surround, speaker trims and seat stitching. Black and violet interior upholstery completes the look.

Android Auto-enabled R-LINK Evolution has also been added to the new vehicle as an option. This enables smartphone driving software such as the Waze navigation, Spotify and Tunein entertainment and Skype and Messenger communications apps to be accessed on the ZOE's touchscreen display.

Prices will be announced closer to when order books open, with deliveries beginning in the summer.
