In nine games, Leonard averaged 16.2 points and 4.7 rebounds in 23.3 minutes per game before the Spurs made a decision to shut him down for an indefinite period to help him rehabilitate completely from the quad injury.

Bad news, Spurs fans: coach Gregg Popovich said he'll be surprised if Kawhi Leonard plays again this season.

The season might be over for Spurs all-star forward Kawhi Leonard. Spurs officials are clearly starting to prepare his teammates for the possibility that they'll have to enter the playoffs without Leonard. "And if by some chance there is, it's going to be pretty late into the season".

"I don't see this as anything different that we have done with any other player, but some people for some reason want to do that (and) that's OK", Popovich said on January 23. Leonard lasted just nine games before being put on the shelf to continue his rehab.

"I'll be surprised if he returns this season", said Popovich. But they are a whopping 10 games back of first, and 9.5 games behind the Warriors.

If the San Antonio Spurs are going to make a deep playoff run this season, it sounds like they'll have to do so without their best player. "I'll be surprised if he gets back this year".

Even without Leonard, the Spurs are in play for the 3 seed in the West with a 35-24 overall record.

One thing to be wary of is the fact that Popovich has been dogged by questions all season about Leonard's health. But if Leonard is indeed out for the season, it's hard to imagine San Antonio reaching the NBA Finals, especially with the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets firing on all cylinders.
