But around 600 people from Linn, Benton and Lincoln counties came together to jump into the Willamette River at the Crystal Lake boat ramp despite water temperature that rescuers standing by measured at a chilly 44 degrees. Early totals have over $17,000 raised, with the money from the plunge and strut benefiting the state games in Wichita and money from the breakfast, lunch and silent auction bolstering local teams.

For the Polar Plunge, participants raise money, then jump into frigid water to show their support for the athletes of Special Olympics.

Alicia Clark, with Special Olympics Oregon, said the Corvallis event raised over $54,000 for the organization.

The top two fundraising participants shaved the heads of LT's faculty organizers, aviation teacher Dave Root and special education teacher Brian Wolf. Last year, she raised $1,200.

The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a cocktail hour and silent auction.

"It's a great event and it's something you can say you've done".

Hamilton's mother, Christine, said her older son is not the type to leap into lakes in February.

This year's event is again joined by the Polar 5k, which will run a attractive route through Kentucky Dam Village State Park that same day.

"Let's just start making it an annual event and we'll get more people and every year it's grown", Bryan Hammond said.

The first plungers of the day had lumberjack inspired costumes.

Each year, polar plungers look forward to dressing up in costume, and of course, helping the Special Olympics. "He's in the Special Olympics and we do it for him". The Law Enforcement agency that co-sponsored the event tweeted this MWDN pic of member of the SPD.

"It was cold, but it was an adrenaline rush", said Jennifer Franklin of the Kentucky State Penitentiary team.
