The white unicorn confection will be first new marshmallow in almost 10 years. General Mills released a statement saying the new marshmallow was chosen with the help of the "keepers of magic themselves - kids".

The unicorn was decided upon through a social media vote after General Mills asked people to vote on which marshmallow they wanted to see next, by using an emoji, reported ABC. The magically delicious brand tapped into the imagination and creativity of young minds to hand select the newest charm and the decision was unanimous.

"Our goal is to not only create a cereal that families and cereal fans will love and enjoy, but to inspire magical possibilities and help spark imagination and fun no matter what the age", Josh DeWitt, marketing manager of Lucky Charms, said in the release. Last year, General Mills gave away 10,000 boxes of Lucky Charms with just the marshmallows - a far larger amount than the 10 boxes it released in 2015.

Lucky Charms announced earlier this month that the hourglass marshmallow would be retired.

The new Lucky Charms contains 12 vitamins and minerals apart from calcium. This addition will join the cereal's roster of mainstays including the heart, rainbow, horseshoe and others, effectively replacing the hourglass marshmallow in the process.

Boxes filled with magical unicorn marshmallows will be widely available at retailers in March, the company said.
