The 19-year-old gouged out her eyes, and she was holding both eyeballs in her hands by the time first responders arrived, according to CBS News.

A witness said a woman ripped out her eyeball then went to a SC church on Tuesday.

"We are certainly traumatized by this tragic event", she said. Local station WYFF reported that she was holding both, while an Associated Press report said she was holding only one of her eyeballs.

Witnesses said they attempted to stop her, but couldn't. Something was terribly wrong.

The Anderson County Sheriff's Department did not immediately return a request for comment about the confusion. The reverend added that he saw the woman on her knees struggling against people who were trying to help her.

Anderson County Sheriff Chad McBride said it took two or three deputies and two emergency medical workers to subdue the woman to start rendering aid.

Hiott told reporters she had seen the woman in the Anderson church occasionally before the gory incident.

Eventually the woman was put on a stretcher and loaded into a medical helicopter.

No charges will be filed in the case.

"Obviously something has altered her mind for her to cause this much harm to herself, predicting that she was probably on some kind of insane cocktail of some kind of drug or something like that", McBride explained to Fox Carolina.
