The game was supposed to start at 8:30 p.m. EST, and was delayed for a little more than an hour before they eventually decided.

The Pelicans neither own nor operate the Smoothie King Center, but team executives were gathered for the majority of the delay trying to unpack the various logistics involved with postponement. While a permanent solution to fix the leak itself wouldn't have been feasible, Pelicans staff attempted to fashion a fabric catch basin in the rafters to stop water from dripping onto the court and allow the game to be played.

At one point, an announcement was made there was going to be a game, and that the teams would warmup shortly.

"The New Orleans Pelicans will honor tickets from last night's game against the Indiana Pacers on the rescheduled date, which will be announced by the National Basketball Association at a later time".

Once the floor is dried and the leak patched, players, coaches and league officials will examine the floor and make sure it's safe for a game.

"It's not a chance you want to take", Pacers coach Nate McMillan said after the public address announcer told the remaining crowd the game had been cancelled. "With the possibility of a leak happening in a 2 ½ hour game, in an area where there was going to be a lot of action, right around the free-throw line. After looking at several things, I think they came to the conclusion that it wasn't worth risking the players".
