As was reported previous year, the Joker stand-alone film will be a part of the studio's yet-to-be-named new branch of DC Comics that will allow Warner Bros to "expand the canon of the iconic comic-book characters with unique story angles that aren't included in its current cinematic universe".

The Joker origin film was announced a few months back and would be considered a separate entity from the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Initial reports indicated that Phillips movie would be executive produced by Martin Scorsese.

There isn't a contractual agreement in place yet between Warner Bros. and Phoenix as the studio has yet to green light the move. Leonardo DiCaprio, a frequent collaborator with Scorsese, was originally rumored to be eyed for the role. It's now Phillips who is fighting to get the multiple Academy Award nominee onboard with the project with the studio heads at Warner Bros.

In the wake of a troubling roll-out for their extended universe, including the poorly received "Justice League" and "Suicide Squad", and the massive success of "Wonder Woman", Vulture reported a year ago that DC and Warner Bros. were rethinking their approach to the films. Phillips is co-writing the script with Scott Silver.

The film will explore the character's time in Gotham as he becomes a supervillain. He is set to reprise the role in a sequel as well as a spin-off film centered around his relationship with Harley Quinn. The new label will consist of side stories and one-offs that have no relation to the already established film universe. Ultimately, he passed on both projects, meaning that his participation in Phillips' Joker movie is not a sure thing.

Only time will tell whether Warner Bros. signs off on the Phoenix getting the gig.
