The shooting was reported around 7 p.m.as an officer was responding to a report of a man screaming, KXAS said. The Richardson Police Department at this time will only say that two people have been hit and one is believed to be an officer.

A Texas police officer was fatally shot Wednesday while responding to a disturbance call at an apartment complex in the city of Richardson, which is just south of Plano.

A SWAT team descended on the scene and police said they are still negotiating with the suspect.

Police have one person in custody, after an hours-long SWAT situation.

It happened near Renner Road and North Star Road at the Breckenridge Point apartments.

The officer's condition was unknown and there may be others who were wounded, the report states. The officer was shot and then taken to the hospital, according to Sgt. Kevin Perlich with the Richardson Police Internal Affairs and Media Relations Unit.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott tweeted his sympathy, saying "the hearts and soul of Texas mourn" for the fallen officer.
