Gale, 29, will compete in the 75kg women's category in her bid to emulate the feat of fellow Leeds boxing star Nicola Adams who went on to win gold in the women's flyweight division at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow having also become European champion by taking gold three years earlier in Rotterdam.

McCormack said he expects to be competing for gold in Australia.

World 10m Platform Champion Daley said: "It is an honour to be selected to represent Team England at my third Commonwealth Games".

He said: "I am over the moon to be going to the Gold Coast".

'I have always wanted to go travelling to Australia, so to be able to go there through boxing is better still.

Washington twins Pat and Luke McCormack have been selected to box at the Commonwealth Games.

"We just need to make sure that we perform on the day".

Pat McCormack fought for England at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and donned a GB vest at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, and is a two-time European Championships silver medallist.

The other members of the men's team are: Cheavon Clarke, Frazer Clarke, Peter McGrail, Ben Whittaker and Galal Yafai.

Whiteside expressed her delight at being selected.

"The draw represents a major milestone on our journey towards Gold Coast 2018, the landmark Games for the global rugby family with the inclusion of a women's event for the first time, which reflects the ambition of our 2017-25 strategic plan to accelerate the development of women in rugby".

"I've had a good start to the year, holding on to my title at the British Diving Championships last month, so I'm feeling good about the Gold Coast".

England Chef de Mission Sarah Winckless added: "English boxing is in an extremely strong position and to be able to welcome 12 boxers to the team this week give me great pleasure. It is an exciting mix and one I look forward to supporting at the Games".
