According to the Department of Health, there have been 24 deaths related to the flu this season.

In Maryland, emergency rooms had 20,127 visits for flu-like symptoms and a voluntary reporting system among 25 doctors' offices in the state show they had 2,606 visits. "We have a lot and there are many other places people can go to get a flu shot". Of those testing positive, 180 were positive for Type A (H3), 53 were positive for Type A (H1).

Arkansas is among the states that have been hit hardest this year, which is one of the nation's worst flu seasons in years, state epidemiologist Dirk Haselow said during a news conference last month.

Smith also said that the number of deaths likely will get much higher before the season is over.

Across the country, many hospitals and health departments are providing free vaccines due to the high numbers of ILI in their emergency departments and hospital admissions. The flu season ends in May.

Officials say anyone who hasn't received the flu shot yet can do so for free at public health departments in Cherokee, Fannin, Gilmore Murray, Pickens, and Whitfield counties.

Only two adult visitors are allowed per patient at a time.
