Leeds were hammered 4-1 at home to Cardiff City on Saturday, two weeks after losing to Millwall at Elland Road and nearly a month on from their FA Cup exit at the hands of Newport County.

If Heckingbottom is appointed as Leeds manager, he will be the 12th man to have the job in the last five years.

The Championship club parted company with Thomas Christiansen on Sunday following a seven-match winless run - the ninth manager to leave Elland Road since 2013.

Following this news, Leeds fans took to Twitter themselves in relief. Callum Paterson, Junior Hoilett and Sean Morrison put the Bluebirds 3-up at halftime. Next weekend they head to Bramall Lane to take on Sheffield United.

Leeds United are back in the limelight this morning, with the club on the lookout for a new head-coach following Thomas Christiansen's departure last night.

Leeds are now looking for their seventh manager since 2014.

Out of a job, McClaren is 4/6to get the Leeds job.

Leeds, however, see Heckingbottom as a highly-talented coach and are ready to install him as Christiansen's successor.

36-year-old German Hannes Wolf has also come into major contention for the role; he last managed Stuttgart before his dismissal last month.

The Magpies also topped Press Association Sport's study earlier this season of managerial changes in the last 20 years, having used 23 managers in that time.

Other interesting names in the mix included former Leeds legend Gordan Strachan (7/1), out fo work Portuguese boss Marco Silva (30/1) and former Man United centre-half and current Reading boss Japp Stam is 30/1.
