Slimani scored seven goals in 23 league appearances in his first season at Leicester but has found his opportunities increasingly limited since Claude Puel was installed as manager in October 2017.

Dubravka, 29, ha been out of the Sparta Prague side this season and is free to leave the Czech club.

Slimani is now valued at around £6m, though would represent a tidy profit for Sporting after they recruited the player a year ago on a free from Belouizdad, who compete in the domestic Algerian league. Hopefully he can give us some experience and some different characteristics to the strikers we have at the moment. He will need to settle down quickly as he is a player coming from overseas, but he is very agile and he can play with his feet.

At global level his record looks more impressive, scoring 12 in 20 appearances, which includes 5 in 7 World Cup qualifying matches plus the goal against South Korea.

Dubravka has nine caps for Slovakia and played against England in September's 2018 World Cup qualifier at Wembley, which England won 2-1.

Slimani may have only scored 13 goals in 46 games for Leicester but he would provide Rafael Benitez's with a focal point up front.

United's move for Slimani comes after Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge chose to join West Bromwich Albion on loan.

Although Leicester were keen to recoup some of their huge outlay on Slimani with a permanent sale, it appears that Newcastle have captured him on a temporary basis.

"I'm happy to be here".
