New York State plans to provide every inmate with a free computer tablet from a Florida-based company that provides services to prison systems.

The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) said on Wednesday (31 January) that approximately 51,000 inmates across 54 facilities within the state will be eligible to receive one of the tablets.

According to prison officials, the tablets will be preloaded with educational materials and the tablets will improve communication with family and friends.

Inmates will not have access to the Internet but will be able to purchase music and e-books. They will have access to special kiosks that will send emails to an approved list of recipients. JPay is providing the tablets at no cost to the state or inmates, and DOCCS is not taking commissions for the tablets.

Officials said certain details of the program, including whether inmates with a history of disciplinary violations will be excluded, are still being worked out.

A message left with JPay wasn't immediately returned.

Inmates in NY will soon have access to tablets while behind bars.
