The Louisiana Department of Revenue is now accepting 2017 state individual income tax returns.

While you have until April 17 to file your taxes, officials recommend you don't wait to file returns.

Taxpayers can begin filing their returns electronically at the state's free web portal, www.revenue.louisiana.gov/fileonline, or through commercially available tax preparation software. Although the IRS will begin accepting both electronic and paper tax returns January 29, paper returns will begin processing later in mid-February as system updates continue. This gives eligible taxpayers access to expert assistance in completing their returns, and guarantees they get their maximum refund.

He says in the beginning of tax season it usually takes about 10 business days to get your refund.

"The best way to protect yourself from the risk of tax identity theft is to keep your financial and personally-identifiable information (Social Security number, driver's license, bank accounts, etc.) under lock and key throughout the year", said Consumer Protection Bureau Director Michelle Reinen.

Choosing e-file and direct deposit for refunds remains the fastest and safest way to file an accurate income tax return and receive a refund.

Those who qualify can get help preparing their taxes at no cost. Fraudulent preparers also may manipulate income figures to obtain fraudulent tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit.
