The Detroit police officer shot while on a domestic violence call last week died Sunday, the police chief announced.

Police Chief James Craig on Sunday called Doss, who had been with the department for two years, an "American hero". "He fought a good fight".

His father, Glenn Doss, Sr., also a Detroit police officer, said at the conference: "I want to thank God for the 25 years that have allowed me the honor and pleasure to raise such a great young man".

The police officer identified as Glenn Doss was answering a call in the 5500 block of McDougall Street near East Kirby in Detroit when he was shot.

Police say Decharlos Brooks fired 32 shots at officers before running inside the home where he had been arguing with his wife. Doss was a passenger in one of the patrol vehicles, according to police.

Doss became a father to his son, Eli, almost nine months ago.

Doss Jr. and his partner, Samuel Anderson, were responding to a domestic violence call.

Brooks went into the home and stayed there until police used a chemical agent to force him out and arrested him at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday, officials said.

According to a page, Doss has a nine-month-old son, Eli, with his girlfriend of nine years, Emily. 25, succumbed to his injuries Sunday afternoon after four days in the hospital.

"He will always be remembered for his bravery and dedication of service to the Detroit Police Department and the residents of the City of Detroit", police said in a statement via Facebook. "These can get 5,000 or 10,000 people", including police from the home department, state and around the country.

The union can't help either, he said, because it's not incorporated as a benevolent association. He never gave me any problem at all, "USA Today reported".

According to a report in Click on Detroit News, an NBC affiliate, Doss who was sitting in the passenger seat was shot twice while another police squad auto was also hit by bullets.
