Nirala made "Supreme" sacrifice and created history in Indian Air Force for the Posthumous, highest gallantry award -Ashoka Chakra.

The Garud commando was martyred in the operation on November 18 past year, in which six terrorists were also neutralised in the joint operation by the Garud and the 13 Rashtriya Rifles. Nirala belonged to Bihar and was part of a unit of IAF commando force Garud which was deployed after terror attack on Pathankot air base for combating terror strikes at crucial armed forces establishments. The awards include a Kirti Chakra and 14 Shaurya Chakras, the second and third highest peacetime gallantry awards.

"Corporal Nirala, displaying exceptional battle craft, positioned himself close to the approach of the hideout, thus cutting off all possibilities of an escape by the terrorists", a Defence Ministry statement said.

Nirala was hit by a barrage of bullets during the firefight but despite being critically injured he continued to engage the remaining terrorists. Detailing the mission, his citation said that the Garud detachment closed in on the target house where the terrorists were hiding and laid a close quarter ambush.
