Even a minor heart irregularity that he recently revealed and must monitor will have no impact on his goal to play his way back to the top of the world golf rankings, McIlroy told the Telegraph on Friday.

The four-time Major victor says that it is probably the result of a viral infection that he picked up in 2016.

"I have a flat T-wave and I'll have to get an echo (cardiogram) on my heart every six months and an MRI scan every year".

He didn't sound overly concerned about the condition, describing it as an "irregularity" that he needs to "stay on top of". "Hey, I was planning on doing that anyway", he said.

In a post on Saturday morning, McIlroy said: "Yesterday [Friday], I did an interview with the Daily Telegraph where I spoke about a range of topics regarding the last 3 months of my life".

As he prepares to kick off his 2018 season in Abu Dhabi on Thursday after a four-month layoff, and then on to Dubai, McIlroy has no worries about his rib.

The interview was covered widely across other media, prompting the Northern Irish golfer to issue a response through his Instragram account.

McIlroy, 28, missed a large portion of the 2017 season with a rib injury and as a result slipped from No 2 in the world rankings to No 11 and failed to win a title.

McIlroy missed extensive time last season due to the rib injury and will return from a almost four-month break next week at the Abu Dhabi Championship.

The former world number one has indicated that he will compete in at least seven tournaments before heading to Augusta in April. "I just crave to be in that position again". I don't feel I need to compare myself to anyone else, because I know what I can do.

"I touched upon a recent finding from a routine health and wellness check".

McIlroy will play in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship next week as he attempts to start this year with a win.
