"This remains a very active search and rescue mission".

"I have never met anyone quite like her and never will again", her daughter-in-law Sarah Gower wrote on Facebook after authorities confirmed Gower was one of 17 people killed by mudslides.

The 101, a key north-south route in California, was tentatively scheduled to reopen on Monday, but cleanup efforts have proved more hard than expected, Santa Barbara City Fire Chief Pat McElroy said on Saturday. The mudslide came as a result of heavy rain along hillsides in the area that had been bereft of trees and other plant life after the large Thomas fire burned through the area in late 2017, USA Today reported.

The search for additional possible victims is continuing.

During an episode of her daytime talk show, Ellen shared how the deadly wildfires had forced her and wife Portia de Rossi to evacuate their home in Montecito, a wealthy coastal enclave north-west of Los Angeles.

NeoTract, a maker of devices used in the medical field of urology, launched a fundraising page Wednesday, asking for financial support for the family of Cantin's mother, Kim, a marketing executive.

Other crews toiled to clean up the massive wreckage of the slide and to fix power, water and gas lines.

Josephine Gower, 69, died when she opened the door to her home, her son, Hayden Gower, told NBC station KSBY. The following missing persons were reported by family and friends, and resided in areas that were heavily damaged during the storm and subsequent mudslides.

With the window rapidly closing on the time needed to find any remaining mudslide victims alive, attorney Trevor Quirk and a handful of friends donned chest-high waders, grabbed shovels and chain saws and canvassed mud-saturated streets of Montecito looking for survivors.

The statement says Riskin was an "exceptional woman" who had exuded strength, grace and elegance.

Several news accounts said that a mudslide swept Roy Rohter, who founded St. Augustine Academy in Ventura, and his wife, Theresa, from their home in Montecito early January 9.

Southern California authorities have corrected the number of people missing since the Montecito mudslides to eight.

The "House of Contentment" has vanished, and its elderly owners are missing - just two of the 13 people who still can't be found after muddy rainwater and debris killed at least 17 people in Southern California.

In updating the missing figure, Brown said that the precise number could fluctuate significantly.

"There's been plenty of cases where they've found people a week after", Santa Barbara County Fire Department spokesman Mike Eliason said. Days before the mudslides, the county issues repeated warnings on social media, news media and emails about the potential for mudslides during the major storm. A new mandatory evacuation order went into effect at 6 p.m. Thursday.
