Three other Palestinians were wounded, one critically, it said.

Soldiers manning a checkpoint outside the village opened fire without warning, said Ghassan Daghlas, who monitors illegal Israeli settlement activities in the northern West Bank.

The most intense clashes erupted in Gaza where Israeli forces fired live ammunition to deter protesters from trespassing on Israeli territory. More than a hundred Palestinians were treated for smoke and gas inhalation after the Israeli soldiers deployed tear gas and smoke grenades.

The statement also expressed deep concern regarding, "the fatal shooting by Israeli security forces of another Palestinian minor, 17-year old Musaab al-Tamimi, during protests in the occupied West Bank on 3 January".

Trump's December declaration of Jerusalem as Israel's capital and his promise to move the US embassy there sparked initial Palestinian protests that have since died down.

The status of Jerusalem has ignited tensions between Israelis and Palestinians for decades.

Two Palestinian teenagers were shot dead in clashes with Israeli troops during riots in the West Bank and Gaza.

Israel's occupation of East Jerusalem effectively put the entire city under de facto Israeli control.

"There is a political decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and we will strive to reach an global political decision to recognize a Palestinian state ... with (eastern) Jerusalem as its capital", Safadi said. Israeli jurisdiction and ownership of Jerusalem, however, is not recognised by the worldwide community.
