I'd feel better about the prospects of the latter if the Academy hadn't stepped away from the very policy - a guaranteed 10 best picture nominees - that it created, in the wake of The Dark Knight's snub in 2009, as part of an effort to include this sort of popular movie.

Coco won for Best Animated Movie and Best Song for "Remember Me".

Actor James Franco, notably from the award function, received the won the award for best actor in a comedy and presenter Walton Goggins had to accept the award on Franco's behalf. Meanwhile, Elisabeth Moss beat out Caitriona Balfe ("Outlander"), Christine Baranski ("The Good Fight"), Claire Foy ("The Crown") and Tatiana Maslany ("Orphan Black") in Best Actress in a Drama Series category thanks to her role on "The Handmaid's Tale". She then went on to thank those who had made her win possible.

"I want to thank all of my children who show me so much love", she said in her acceptance speech. She sported similar accents, this time on the ends of her sleeves, at Sunday night's Golden Globes.

"Here's to the male casting directors who didn't ever say anything derogatory to me in an audition", Nash said. "It really is an incredible honor".

"Every actor in this room knows you are only as good as the other actors you work with", she gushed.

"What I think is so powerful that came out of that was the idea of hope, and light, and optimism, and positivity, and we discussed that as being expressed in the dress", she told us.

There may be a dark cloud hanging over Hollywood right now.

HBO's "Big Little Lies" was the favourite TV program of the year, winning Best Limited Series, Best Actress in a Limited Series (Nicole Kidman), Best Supporting Actor (Alexander Skarsgård) and Best Supporting Actress (Laura Dern).

"The thing is weirdly, without trying, it kind of is reflecting what's going on because - women's struggles in the workplace, women's struggles in the entertainment industry, women in comedy", Sherman-Palladino said.

While the blackout theme of the Golden Globes was meant to reflect the death of sexist Hollywood practices, the white theme was chosen to represent a new hopeful era.

Two ceremonies in to the months-long event that is 2018 award season, Get Out is finally getting the praise it deserves.

"The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, who picked up a best comedy award at Critics' Choice, echoed the hope that the conversation and movement would continue to make an impact. Ted Danson took home the trophy for best actor in a comedy for his turn as Michael in comedy The Good Place. Also, actresses Allison Janney and Margot Robbie both won individual awards for their portrayals in the film, I, Tonya.

RuPaul, Shark Tank, The Voice, and Born This Way took the top honours for Reality Television shows.
