There were maybe 30 to 40 people at the party, and I had no idea that the prophet of the church, and other top leaders, were going to be there. Most recently, President Donald Trump visited with Mormon church leaders during a visit to Utah, but President Monson was absent.

The relationship with the LDS Church, a fast-growing faith group, has been a priority for AJC in its pioneering interreligious work. He became president of the church in 2008. Senior LDS delegations have met with AJC leadership in Jerusalem, as well.

That same year, Monson also introduced the new church policy that lowered the age of full-time missionaries from 19 to 18 for men and 21 to 19 for women.

"President Monson always seemed more interested in what we do with our religion rather than in what we believe", Armand Mauss, a retired professor of sociology and religious studies at Washington State University, told the AP.

Smith has known Monson almost all her life.

Remembering the life and legacy of President Thomas S. Monson (1927-2018).

Brought up in Salt Lake City, Monson was designated in 1963 to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, the congregation's second-most noteworthy overseeing body after the three-man First Presidency. Orrin Hatch, who said of Monson, "Service was his motto and humility his hallmark".

He also got his MBA from Brigham Young University and he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

I don't take any delight in Monson's death.

He added, "While I will miss President Monson, I am sure he had a happy reunion with his wife, Frances". He was known for his love of show tunes, Boy Scouts and the Utah Jazz. "That's who he is, someone whose impact on people is more important than are his calculations or strategies for the church". This both increased the number of missionaries, but also the number of female missionaries. The two counselors then revert back to their places of seniority within the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, which is determined by the date on which the apostle was ordained, not by age. The growth was spurred in part by the church's missionary program, in which young Mormon men are heavily encouraged to spend two years overseas spreading the faith or performing humanitarian work.

His successor has not yet been named, but is widely expected to be Russell M. Nelson.

"Prophets see ahead - they see the harrowing dangers the adversary has placed, or will yet place, in our path", President Nelson said.

"Elder Nelson is still healthy".

Monson's last appearance at the biannual General Conference was last April.
