African countries demand retraction, apology for Trump's comments

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., who attended the Thursday meeting, insisted Friday that Trump used the language in speaking about immigrants from Haiti and countries in Africa.

"We would not deign to make comments as derogatory as that about any country that has any kind of socio-economic or other difficulties", Duarte said, adding that much like their African counterparts millions of USA citizens were affected by problems such as unemployment.

He denied having said anything derogatory about Haitians. Trump said, according to these people, referring to countries mentioned by the lawmakers.

Botswana's government yesterday summoned the U.S. ambassador to complain over remarks reportedly made by Trump.

Haitians at home and overseas were stunned, and Internet message boards and radio stations were flooded with angry and anguished comments. It's incumbent on everyone as global citizens, he said, to challenge the president's views on countries outside the USA, especially those that are poor and in need.

Mia Love, a congresswoman from Utah who is of Haitian descent, called Trump's reported comments "unkind" and "divisive", and demanded an apology. Last year, Trump said Haitian immigrants "all have AIDS", and that Nigerian immigrants would not "go back to their huts" after visiting the US, according to a New York Times report.

"The positive comment on Norway makes the underlying sentiment very clear", Colville said, warning that Trump's comments should not merely be brushed aside as "vulgar language".

"Given the historical reality of how African Americans arrived in the United States as slaves, and the United States being the biggest example of how a nation has been built by migration - for a statement like that to come is particularly upsetting", AU spokeswoman Ebba Kalondo said.

Trump denied saying anything derogatory about Haitians. "I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians".

Immigration legislation has become time-sensitive because when Trump ended the DACA program in September he gave Congress six months to come up with a legislative solution before announcing that deportations would begin. But neither he nor the White House denied the most controversial of his comments: using the word "s--hole" to describe countries in Africa and saying he would prefer immigrants from countries like Norway instead.

"The anniversary of the devastating quake 8 years ago is a day to remember the tragedy, honor the resilient people of Haiti, & affirm America's commitment to helping our neighbors", Clinton wrote on Twitter.

Haiti, though the poorest country in the Americas, has played an outsized role in the history of the region.

Many of those troops are based at a USA base in the East African country of Djibouti. The country suffered trade embargoes in the wake of independence from powers including the United States, anxious the freed slaves would spark revolt elsewhere.

Haiti also supported the American Revolution by sending troops to the Battle of Savannah in Georgia in 1779.
