Fans can't seem to agree when it comes to a report that the Royals have made a seven-year, $147 million contract offer to free agent Eric Hosmer. And the Phillies singed Carlos Santana to a three-year, $60 million deal, somewhat limiting potential suitors for Hosmer. Hosmer is apparently looking for an eight or nine-year contract, but it does not appear any clubs are offering such a deal at this point. Such things can, of course, make two deals which are close in overall value like these quite different in overall value. The fact that Hosmer is still just 28-years old is also intriguing.

The calendar has flipped into the new year and several top free agents are still on the market.

The Red Sox signed first baseman Mitch Moreland to a two-year contract last month and other suitors, outside of the Padres, have failed to materialize. With Dayton Moore running the franchise, and a couple of World Series visits, it seems that owner David Glass is more willing to spend big.

So as Moore arrived at the Winter Meetings last month in Orlando, he signalled the start of a long and thorough rebuild, stating: "We have to build our farm system at the level we had it in 2010; that is the focus of this organization as we sit here today".

The Royals can offer him something akin to baseball immortality however. For a team that has the chemistry of the Royals, that is not something that should be underestimated. Someone should sign Hosmer, and for a considerable amount of money, but are the Royals the team to do it?
