On Wednesday, he encouraged people to donate blood if they are able to. Blood shortages often worsen in the winter, but the need never stops.

The Red Cross says because of the cancellations, 5,500 blood and platelet donations have gone uncollected.

Bratton tells that there is a need for all blood type but the need of type B-negative, type AB, and type O negative is higher.

The American Red Cross issued an urgent call today for blood and platelet donors of all blood types to give now to help address a winter blood donation shortage.

Severe winter weather has had a tremendous impact on blood donations already this year.

"Even temporary disruptions to blood and platelet donations can diminish the availability for hospital patients", Clifford Numark, senior vice president of Red Cross Blood Services, said in a statement.

Please make donating blood a priority on January 15. Seasonal illnesses, such as the flu, and hectic holiday schedules collectively led to more than 28,000 fewer donations being collected than what was needed in November and December, according to the Red Cross. The next Independence American Red Cross Blood Drive is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 15 from 1 to 6 p.m.at the First Presbyterian Church, 115 6th Avenue NW.

Gov. Malloy says he comes from a family of donors and has been giving blood for the past 40 years. Keeping in mind that each person's donation can help three patients, that loss really adds up.
