"Edge ST puts a new animal on the road - a performance SUV with a track mentality", says Hau Thai-Tang, executive vice president-Product Development and Purchasing.

The Edge is a steady seller for Ford.

The reign of the sedan is over-mowed down by the fuel-sipping Escapes and EcoBoost-powered Expeditions-and it's for that reason that Ford made a decision to funnel its R&D money into the all-new Edge crossover. Four new body colors and an equal number of new wheel choices ensure that customers can differentiate their Edges from the rest easily, all the while standard LED headlamps as well as LED taillights and optional LED fog lights add a touch of newness and ensure that there's no confusing this with a vehicle from yesteryear at night. The features include Forward Collision Warning and Dynamic Brake Support; Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection; BLIS with Cross-Traffic Alert; Lane-Keeping Alert; Lane-Keeping Assist; Auto High Beams; and Hill-Start Assist.

The vehicle also has available evasive-steering assist to help drivers steer around stopped or slowing vehicles. The rear liftgate is also a new stamping, and features a gloss black center panel that's likely charm some and repulse others. An embedded Wi-Fi modem capable of supporting 10 devices up to 50 feet (15 m) from the vehicle is standard. Engineers said the service is free for a trial period, after which owners will have to pay for the connection through a provider.

SYNC with AppLinkā„¢, an enhanced voice-recognition communications and entertainment system, is also standard. The goal for Ford was to make an SUV that is "fun to drive", Aquino said. Connected to a quicker-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission, the engine has the ability to route power to the four wheels.

Stephanie Brinley, senior analyst at IHS Markit, said the exterior design and technology updates on the Edge are notable and important to consumers. The standard vehicle comes with a 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine paired with an 8-speed transmission.

The Edge ST is powered by a 335bhp 2.7-litre V6 petrol engine that develops 515Nm of torque; power is delivered through an eight-speed automatic gearbox and standard all-wheel drive.

The redesigned Edge and Edge ST go on sale this summer. For 2019 the Edge gains a redesigned centre console with a rotary gear-shift dial a-la Jaguar Land Rover, FordPass Connect as standard with a WiFi hotspot, the availability of wireless phone charging, and the availability of a new 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen Play premium audio system.
