Actors and actresses are however expected to turn out in black this year, in solidarity with victims of Weinstein and numerous other figures exposed by the harassment and abuse scandal, including Kevin Spacey, Brett Ratner and Dustin Hoffman.

The Golden Globes, which were hosted at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, saw the likes of Meryl Streep, Emma Watson and Kerry Washington lead stars by wearing all black for the Time's Up movement.

A frequent Trump critic on his late-night show, Meyers jested about what he said would be the commander in chief's disdain for the group that doles out the Golden Globes.

Hollywood's awards season is seen as wide open, but the early returns Sunday were good for one of the leading nominees: the revenge black comedy "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri". And after a few mild jokes about the energy in the room - like "Good evening ladies and remaining gentlemen" - he turned his satirical gaze towards Hollywood's worst offenders.

Viewers' annoyance with Seacrest's avoidance of asking male attendees about sexual harassment was further compounded by the fact that he was accused of misconduct by a former wardrobe stylist late past year, allegations he has since denied.

"There's a new era underway, and I can tell because it's been years since a white man was this nervous in Hollywood". He's also proven himself to be more openly willing to admit when he, a straight white guy, can't speak to certain experiences the way, say, his women writers can. But if it was going to be a man cracking jokes about systemic sexism and inequality in Hollywood, at least the gig went to one who knows when to hand the duty off to those more intrinsically capable of landing the punchlines.

"They tried to get a woman to host this show, they really did". I'm not even the most powerful Seth in the room tonight.

He then quipped: 'Harvey Weinstein isn't here tonight because I've heard rumours he's insane and hard to work with, but don't worry, he will be back in 20 years when he becomes the first person booed during the In Memoriam'.

Spacey was also fired from the Netflix show, which he fronted.

"It's about people who are voiceless, and it's about empowerment", added Spencer, who is nominated for "Shape of Water". I hope he can do a Southern accent. cuz Kevin Spacey sure couldn't. Remember that, simpler times, ' he said.

"So thank you for all the unbelievable work that you've all done and continue to do", he said, "I look forward to you leading us to whatever comes next".
