Newcastle United got 2018 off to a ideal start this afternoon when they defeated Stoke City 1-0 at the Bet365 Stadium.

The winger joined Newcastle on a permanent contract from Chelsea in the summer of 2017 after spending the 2016-17 campaign on loan at St. James' Park.

However, it was also being asked by fans and journalists, if Rafa Benitez only had a limited budget, why didn't he use the Murphy money towards buying a "proper" striker - the thinking being if you added the Joselu and Murphy money, it comes to £15m/£17m to spend.

And the victory at Stoke means that Newcastle have now taken seven points from four games.

2018 started brilliantly for Newcastle United.

Hughes stormed out of his post-match news conference after he was forced to defend his decision to rest a number of key players at Stamford Bridge.

A bit early to say Jacob Murphy is going to really make it but certainly he is heading in the right direction.

"It was the ideal way to start the year", said Murphy.

Hughes is scheduled to brief the media ahead of the Potters' FA Cup third-round tie against Coventry City after a second successive Premier League defeat at home to Newcastle plunged them into further relegation trouble.

And, game by game, he's growing in confidence. I think for the last two or three weeks, the agenda within the media and lots of platforms, and social media. that is what was going to happen.

"Maybe I could have at the end, but it would have been a risk, and I don't want to take a risk when you do not have too many players".

Benitez told The Shields Gazette: "I knew that Atsu could play in this position, because I knew him before". "I've been smiling ever since I got into the dressing room, and the lads are buzzing for me as well".
