The attack on foreign nationals comes days after a German national and a Swiss couple were attacked in Sonbhadra and Fatehpur Sikri respectively. However, reacting promptly the Mirzapur Police have arrested eight accused and registered an FIR against 13 people who were involved in the incident.

To a question, Singh said the youths did not attack the foreign tourists.

According to police, four people were initially arrested in connection with the incident, which took place at Lakhania Dari waterfall in Mirzapur. The tourists were just walking without disturbing anyone, when some of the male residents began to pass lewd and disrespectful comments on the female tourists in the group.

When French nationals objected, it led to an argument and soon tuned into a fight.

The men left only to return in a large group and both the groups got engaged in another round of fight.

A police spokesperson said, "No attack was made on any French national, but a French national sustained injuries as he tried to intervene in an altercation between two group of Indians". The accused were later arrested.
