The world's 23 time grand slam tennis champion Serena Williams is planning to make a return to the game soon and she is targeting the Australian Open, the Irish media have confirmed.

The 23-time grand slam singles champion has since given birth to a daughter, Alexis Olympia, and Wednesday internet mogul Alexis Ohanian.

"She's got her visa, she's entered, she's practising and she's probably just got to find a bit more space for a bigger entourage", Tiley is quoted as saying.

In January 2017, Serena Williams defeated her sister Venus Williams to lift the Australian Open.

Today, he told the Herald Sun that Williams's participation in the tournament is "very likely".

For the first time since 2016 Australian Open, Maria Sharapova will play a Grand Slam with no need of a wild card.

"She wants to break a record that is Margaret Court's", added Tiley.

"We'd be pretty excited about the possibility [of her coming]", Tiley said.

Williams' coach Patrick Mouratoglou, in an interview to CNN, had earlier said that the decision on Serena's return will be taken after seeing how she fares in training.

"We are expecting the AO Game to be a sell-out so we urge fans to get their tickets quickly and come along and enjoy a great day at the tennis, followed by a night at the basketball", ANBL chief executive Jeremy Loeliger said.

United will play the Cairns Taipans at the venue, which is usually locked out by the Australian Open for the last two weeks of January.
