President Ram Nath Kovind led the nation in paying homage to Dr Ambedkar by offering floral tributes to Baba Saheb at Sansad Bhavan Lawns in the Parliament House complex this morning.

Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Thawar Chand Gehlot, Minister of State Ramdas Athawale and Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Vijay Goel and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

Inaugurating the Dr Ambedkar International Centre here, he said, "It is a different matter that they are thinking more of Baba Bhole (Shiva) than Babasaheb... even that is okay". Mr Modi said Dr Ambedkar was always hopeful for India's socio and economic development.

"Such was his incredible strength that when years after his demise efforts were made by such people to crush his philosophy, when efforts were made to erase his contribution towards nation-building, his ideals could not be wiped out from people's memory", he said.

The Prime Minister said, BHIM app was launched for the poor and downtrodden and is a great step reflecting the economic development of the country.

Modi added that the Government had developed five places related to Babasaheb Ambedkar into pilgrimage spots.

Without taking any names, Modi said a particular "family" wanted to erase Ambedkar's role but the architect of the Indian constitution has remained influential.

The Prime Minister recalled Dr. Ambedkar's words, that we should make our political democracy, a social democracy as well.

"But I see hope in today's generation...."

The Centre, he said, was a fusion of Buddhist and modern architecture.
