An Israeli father escorting the hike, one of two carrying a gun, fired into the crowd to break it up, killing a Palestinian farmer.

The military retaliated with six strikes on terrorist positions in Gaza, four of them belonging to the Islamic Jihad and two to Hamas, which rules the coastal enclave.

"The IDF holds Hamas responsible for hostile activity perpetrated against Israel from the Gaza Strip", the IDF said in a statement.

At around 6:30 pm sirens sounded in the Shaar Hanegev Regional Council in the northwestern Negev.

Rockets or mortar rounds were fired Thursday afternoon at Israeli army forces.

"The security forces will continue acting to ensure the safety of civilians in the area", an IDF spokesman said.

Later in the evening another launch was reported with rockets said to have fallen in open fields in Israeli territory.

The rocket fire followed several clashes between Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli forces along the Gaza border earlier in the day, in which at least nine Gazans were injured, according to the local health ministry.

Militants fired on Thursday makeshift rockets from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel in response to US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, eyewitnesses said.
