AP Player of the Year finalists: Mayfield, Love, Jackson
08 December, 2017, 04:55
This awards night representation likely proves Mayfield is the nation's top player and inevitable Heisman Trophy victor on Saturday.
Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield is the victor of the 2017 Davey O'Brien Award, given out on Thursday at the College Football Awards Show at the College Football Hall of Fame.
Mayfield is the fourth Oklahoma player to win the prestigious award, joining quarterback Josh Heupel (2000) and running backs Billy Sims (1978) and Steve Owens (1969).
Mayfield beat out Penn State running back Saquon Barkley and Stanford running back Bryce Love to win the award. Alabama cornerback Minkah Fitzpatrick won the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the best defensive back, and followed it up with the Bednarik Award, which is given to the best overall defensive player.
Louisville’s Lamar Jackson, Stanford’s Bryce Love or Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield will be named the winner of the 2017 Heisman Trophy tonight
The Big 12 enjoyed a solid awards night, as Oklahoma State's James Washington won the Biletnikoff Award that is given to the nation's top wide receiver and Texas' Michael Dickson won the Ray Guy Award (nation's top punter). The University of Iowa won the Disney Spirit Award. Wishnowski was a finalist for this year's Ray Guy Award as well.
Several awards have already been announced.
Although the Heisman Trophy victor won't be announced until Saturday, it will likely be a formality as Mayfield has dominated just about every aspect of the game this season.
