The shooter is down, according to the police chief. One Facebook user said that over a dozen people have been injured in this shooting.

KRQE reported the suspect was in custody.

The nearby city of Bloomfield has placed its schools on lockdown as a precautionary measure and is asking parents stay away until further notice.

Aztec is a community of 6,700 residents, located in rural northwestern New Mexico, about 180 miles from Albuquerque.

At this time deputies and Lt. Kyle Lincoln from the San Juan County Sheriff Department are clearing the building and actively searching the school.

"Parents of Aztec High School students, please meet at Aztec Police Department to pick up your kids", the San Juan County Sheriff's Office wrote in a Facebook post.
