Centre on Thursday has told the apex court that it shall extend Aadhar linking deadline until 31 March next year.

Eralier, quoting a government official PTI reported that the government will give additional three-six months to link the biometric identifier Aadhaar with PAN in case the Supreme Court rules in its favour. The same for SIM has been mandated to establish identify of mobile phone users. The extension would, in all likelihood, include the mandatory linking of Aadhaar with bank accounts. "Therefore, it is clear that the video is outdated because it does not reflect the latest legal position as on today (December 7, 2017)", the statement said.

To address this concern of the citizens the Attorney General reportedly said that it would require a judicial order from the SCI itself to extend the deadline to March 31, 2018. The government also said that with the linking of Aadhaar card the people will get benefit of all the government schemes.

The apex court had, in October, said that a Constitution Bench would commence hearing on the clutch of petitions against Aadhaar scheme from the last week of November. Interim orders may be passed next week.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra was informed by Attorney General K K Venugopal that the Centre was willing to extend the deadline of 31 December to 31 March next year for linking of Aadhaar with various services and schemes.

Also there is no change in the deadlines set for verifying bank accounts and PAN cards.

The Central government has previously made Aadhaar card mandatory for carrying out nearly all the legal tasks in the country.

Keep in mind, that once the Aadhaar-PAN linking is done, you can e-Verify your IT returns using Aadhaar if your mobile is registered with Aadhaar.
