Previous year the Emmanuel Family & Child Development Center inadvertently missed the deadline to apply for Toys for Tots, but the public came through with donations.

Toys For Tots is run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.

"I think past year was when we really noticed that there was a need for toys for kids", said Crissy Davies. Sannes said the collected toys are being stored in a warehouse off US 301 and will be sorted and distributed out before Christmas.

Organizers say donations are up this year but so are the needs of people in the community. Monetary donations can be by check (made out to: Marine Toys for Tots Foundation) or in cash.

Volunteers then hand out the toys to families in need. She said she took over the coordinator's role in the county four years ago as a way to help others.

Toys for Tots collects new toys and distributes them as Christmas gifts to children in need. The children also receive stocking stuffers that consist of children's books.

The Toys for Tots drive is ongoing at the Fort Dodge Fareway, 1231 First Ave.

The 40th annual Toys for Tots Motorcycle Parade saw a large turnout passing through Chicago this week, with thousands showing up to donate toys, according to ABC 7 Eyewitness News.
