Gov. Andrew Cuomo, meanwhile, is urging drivers to use caution in areas hit by lake effect snow.

There's a winter storm watch for Jefferson and Lewis counties that starts at 7 a.m. Wednesday and lasts until 7 a.m. Friday.

But Nichols says to the west of Rochester, particularly Genesee and Wyoming Counties, snow could accumulate several inches by Friday. "A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect from 4 pm today until 4 pm tomorrow (Thu.) for the lakeshore counties, plus Kalamazoo and Lake Counties for 2-4" of snow. Up to 18 inches are possible in the Tug Hill counties of Lewis and Jefferson, with lower amounts in Oswego County. Localized travel problems will be possible. Winds and temperatures in the 20s Wednesday night will bring wind chills dipping into the teens, the Weather Service said.

Snow showers could reach into Finger Lakes and along the Thruway in Central New York, but "accumulations, if any, will be nominal", the weather service said. Another surge of arctic air looks to arrive across the lower Great Lakes and "it continues to look reasonable that another round of significant lake effect snow will ramp up by Sunday into Monday", the Weather Service said.
