An upturn in form for Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil at Arsenal may be down to the approaching transfer window, says Emmanuel Petit.

The expectation is that City will still have to pay over £50m to get Sanchez in January.

That won't come as any surprise, as Sanchez is available on a free-transfer next summer if, as expected, he doesn't agree a new contract with Arsenal.

Wenger is very much likely to play another second-string side when they take on the Belarusian outfit in north London on Thursday. 'That's what we've said many times.

There is a huge likelihood that the pair are playing their hearts out in their bid to attract interest from potential suitors with their futures being up in the air, but there could well be the possibility that they are fighting to stay also. I really hope they remain at the club. "Unless something unbelievable happens I don't see that changes".

The 28 year-old, who came close to sealing a £60m deadline day move to the Etihad is starting to pick up form for Arsenal, which is flawless news for the club if they decide to part with him in January.

Pep Guardiola's side are already high-flying and the addition of Sanchez would be bad news for the rest of the Premier League.

However, the Gunners showed in the summer that they would do business with City, only reneging on an agreement to sell him once a deal to sign Thomas Lemar from Monaco fell through.

The Mirror reported earlier this week that Sterling, who turns 23 on Friday (8 December), wants to put contract talks on hold to focus on helping City to win the title and on maintaining his form ahead of the World Cup.
