Police said he shot an officer on Tuesday afternoon. The suspect fled into nearby woods and officers reported hearing shots from the woods at 12:58 p.m. Police said Chad Klahs was well known to them.

According to news reports, Klahs was taken into custody and a gun had been confiscated from him at the time, but he allegedly had another gun in his possession and shot O'Conner from behind, inside the squad auto, while handcuffed.

The wounded police officer is Ryan O'Conner, 44, Arnold Police Chief Bob Shockey said. But Jefferson County Sheriff's Capt. Gary Higginbotham says police were unaware that Klahs had a second gun that was apparently stolen from a vehicle. Klahs continued to run and eventually stole another gun while fleeing.

The suspect also suffered a gunshot wound, though it's unclear whether O'Connor shot him in defense or it was self-inflicted.

It isn't clear if the suspect had another gun or if he grabbed the officer's weapon.

Both O'Conner and the suspect were shot.

The shooting happened Tuesday outside the police station in Arnold, Missouri.

Higginbotham said authorities believe the suspect was handcuffed in the SUV and that he may have slipped free.

Emergency crews are on scene in Arnold after an officer was shot. Jefferson County Sheriff's Capt. Gary Higginbotham says the officer was shot on the back of the neck or head.

At last report, O'Connor is in stable condition.

Investigators responded to a burglary call in the 1800 block of Fox Point at around 1pm.
