The studio behind Pokemon Go, Niantic, didn't come into the whole augmented reality games play with the release of its Pokemon title. From how it sounds, Prime will be a top-to-bottom reboot, with new art, a new story, and an entirely new design that can take advantage of updated mobile technology, most specifically including tech from Apple's ARKit, Google's ARCore, and a move to the base platform used in Pokemon Go. The new game will debut in 2018.

When playing Ingress, users choose one of two teams - The Enlightened and The Resistance - and they wander the real world looking for Portals to capture.

We have no details as to what the Ingress anime will look like, but we're hoping that it implements some terms seen in the game to make it more immersive and realistic to the fans.

It seems like players who are newly interested in this type of game are more likely to latch onto an existing strong IP like Pokemon or Harry Potter, but Niantic clearly isn't ready to give up on the world of Ingress just yet. Today, the company has announced that work has begun on Ingress Prime, a reboot of the original, improving it with new features and more.

While new features will integrate a smartphone's camera to help further immerse players in the sci-fi world of Ingress. Although this game was extremely popular back to its days, by the time the release of Pokemon Go was around, it was mostly forgotten.

Ingress Prime will be available on iOS and Android devices in 2018. It's unclear if Ingress Prime or the Harry Potter game will arrive first, but either way, Niantic is primed for another big year in 2018. Additionally, the global game board will reset as part of the new storyline, with current Agents able to retain all of their current in-game progression, level and items in Ingress Prime.
