Worryingly, this included locations that not only accessed but also stored personal information of some of TIO's customers, as well as customers of TIO billers. TIO Networks operates over 60,000 bill payment kiosks across North America and has over 14 million registered users who use its services to make bill payments for wireless connections, cable, utilities, and other kinds of purchases.

Duke Energy officials said customers whose info may have been accessed will receive instructions from TIO on how to register for one year of complimentary credit monitoring.

"While we apologise for any inconvenience this suspension may cause, the security of TIO's systems and the protection of TIO's customers are our highest priorities", PayPal had said at the time.

TIO Networks, a bill-payment platform PayPal acquired over the summer, announced a security vulnerability may have affected the personal information of some 1.6 million customers, according to multiple media reports.

The possible compromise of info affects the customers of any company that uses the Global Express network for payment processing, officials said.

"At this point, TIO can not provide a timeline for restoring bill payment services, and continues to recommend that you contact your biller to identify alternative ways to pay your bills", TIO Networks says.

On November 10, PayPal suspended TIO's operations after it discovered security vulnerabilities in the firm's platform. TIO said at the moment, it "cannot provide a timeline for restoring bill payment services, and continues to recommend that you contact your biller to identify alternative ways to pay your bills".
